What Are the 6 Kalimas?

The Six Kalimas are important declarations of faith in Islam that summarize fundamental beliefs about Tawheed (Oneness of Allah), Prophethood, and seeking forgiveness. These Kalimas are essential for every Muslim and are often taught to children at an early age.

1. First Kalma (Tayyab) – The Pure Declaration

   • لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَّسُوْلُ اللّٰهِ
   • Meaning: “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the messenger of Allah.”
   • This Kalma affirms the Oneness of Allah and the Prophethood of Muhammad (PBUH).

2. Second Kalma (Shahadat) – Testimony of Faith

   • أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ
   • Meaning: “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone without any partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.”
   • This Kalma is the official declaration of faith for anyone embracing Islam.

3. Third Kalma (Tamjeed) – Glorification of Allah

   • سُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ وَلَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَاللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللّٰهِ الْعَلِيِّ الْعَظِيْمِ
   • Meaning: “Glory be to Allah, all praise be to Allah, there is no god but Allah, Allah is the Greatest. There is no power and no strength except from Allah, the Most High, the Most Great.”
   • This Kalma highlights praising Allah and seeking His help in all matters.

4. Fourth Kalma (Touheed) – Oneness of Allah

   • لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ يُحْيِيْ وَيُمِيْتُ وَهُوَ حَيٌّ لَّا يَمُوْتُ أَبَدًا أَبَدًا ذُو الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ بِيَدِهِ الْخَيْرُ وَهُوَ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيْرٌ
   • Meaning: “There is no god but Allah, alone without a partner. His is the kingdom, and His is the praise. He gives life and causes death, and He is Ever-Living and does not die. Possessor of Majesty and Honor, in His hand is all good, and He is over all things competent.”
   • This Kalma reinforces the absolute authority and power of Allah.

5. Fifth Kalma (Astaghfar) – Seeking Forgiveness

   • أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللّٰهَ رَبِّيْ مِنْ كُلِّ ذَنْبٍ أَذْنَبْتُهُ عَمْدًا أَوْ خَطَأً سِرًّا أَوْ عَلَانِيَةً وَأَتُوْبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنَ الذَّنْبِ الَّذِيْ أَعْلَمُ وَمِنَ الذَّنْبِ الَّذِيْ لَا أَعْلَمُ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ عَلَّامُ الْغُيُوْبِ وَغَفَّارُ الذُّنُوْبِ وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللّٰهِ الْعَلِيِّ الْعَظِيْمِ
   • Meaning: “I seek forgiveness from Allah, my Lord, from every sin I committed knowingly or unknowingly, secretly or openly. I turn to Him in repentance for the sins I am aware of and those I am not aware of. Indeed, You are the Knower of the unseen and the Forgiver of sins. There is no power and no strength except from Allah, the Most High, the Most Great.”
   • This Kalma teaches humility and repentance, a key aspect of a Muslim’s faith.

6. Sixth Kalma (Radd-e-Kufr) – Rejecting Disbelief

   • اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ أَنْ أُشْرِكَ بِكَ شَيْئًا وَأَنَا أَعْلَمُ وَأَسْتَغْفِرُكَ لِمَا لَا أَعْلَمُ بِهِ تُبْتُ عَنْهُ وَتَبَرَّأْتُ مِنَ الْكُفْرِ وَالشِّرْكِ وَالْكِذْبِ وَالْغِيْبَةِ وَالْبِدْعَةِ وَالنَّمِيْمَةِ وَالْفَوَاحِشِ وَالْبُهْتَانِ وَالْمَعَاصِيْ كُلِّهَا وَأَسْلَمْتُ وَآمَنْتُ وَأَقُوْلُ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَّسُوْلُ اللّٰهِ
   • Meaning: “O Allah! I seek refuge in You from associating anything with You knowingly, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I do not know. I repent from it, I free myself from disbelief, polytheism, lying, backbiting, innovation, slander, immorality, false accusations, and all sins. I submit to You, believe in You, and say: There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”
   • This Kalma protects against Shirk (associating partners with Allah) and Kufr (disbelief).
